David, a sociologist, and his wife Pam, along with their 8-year-old daughter Missy, spend their summer on Fire Island. Their tranquil retreat is disrupted by the unexpected arrival of Marty, an old flame of David and Pam's college days, accompanied by her chimp, Jinks, whom she has raised since infancy and taught sign language. Marty's visit stirs up unresolved tensions and secrets from the past, particularly concerning a traumatic incident in Africa that left Marty with a severe brain injury.

Hoping for reconciliation, David, Pam, and Marty soon find themselves facing a series of mysterious deaths, beginning with animals and escalating to children.
