Issue #49, June 1999 of Big Brother features Chad Fernandez, a full-length interview with one of the era’s standout skaters, plus Elements of Style, a look at skateboarding’s changing relationship with fashion and streetwear. Costa Rica brings a tropical road-trip adventure with Dimitry Elyashkevich, Rick Howard, Mike Carroll and Chico Brenes, while Jason Adams gets his own feature, digging into his skating and the personality behind it.

The Extra Crap department is particularly loaded here, with Dave’s Field Trip, the long-awaited “Heaven on a Stick,” a surprisingly extensive guide to Scientology, Winnie the Poo, Black Metal, Dark Funeral, Melvins, Zeke and a Swedish Drain feature. Add Satan’s Scrapbook, Skate Flicks, Goddamn AMs, CD and video-game reviews, and you’ve got a very late-’90s Big Brother issue: skateboarding, punk, metal, bad ideas and absolutely no interest in behaving itself.
