Big Brother 80

Big Brother Issue #80 (January 2002), dubbed "The Nice Issue," is the magazine's tongue-in-cheek attempt to produce an unusually wholesome edition, replacing its trademark shock tactics with stories about positivity, community and skateboarding, while never quite abandoning its sarcastic sense of humour. The cover promises "No Sex, No Drugs, No Booze, No Cussing," but the self-aware jokes make it clear the magazine is still poking fun at itself.

The issue is anchored by an extensive interview with Tony Hawk, reflecting on his career, the mainstream explosion of skateboarding and life beyond competition. Andy Macdonald also receives a feature, while coverage of the Vans Triple Crown, the Skate Flicks video showcase, Skatepark Review, the regular Gosh Darn Ams amateur spotlight and the monthly news section keep the focus firmly on skateboarding. The issue also includes a hands-on feature about building and decorating a backyard mini ramp, celebrating DIY skate culture and the simple pleasures of skating with friends.

Outside of skateboarding, Big Brother continues its eclectic editorial mix with interviews featuring Christian death metal band GWAR, ska legends The Slackers, heavy metal band Helmet and Christian rock group Jacob's Dream, alongside regular columns including Potpourri, Skate Dolls, CD Reviews and reader letters. Equal parts satire and sincere celebration of skateboarding's more positive side, the "Nice Issue" remains one of the magazine's most distinctive themed editions.
