Cemetery Lights' The Church on the Island is a compact but potent dose of occult black metal that draws heavily from the primitive spirit of the genre's first wave while maintaining a dark identity of its own. Released in 2018 through Nuclear War Now! Productions, the Rhode Island band's second release unfolds like a forbidden ritual, moving through eerie melodies, razor-edged riffs and a deliberately raw production that gives the record an authentic underground atmosphere. Tracks such as “The Church on the Island,” “Cemetery Lights” and “Resurrection” establish a sense of supernatural dread that lingers throughout the entire release.
Across the second half, “Necrocacophony,” “Rapture” and the excellent closer “The Bell” deepen the album's necromantic themes with memorable riffs and a haunting sense of atmosphere. The songwriting balances aggression and mood, evoking forgotten graveyards, abandoned churches and occult ceremonies without sacrificing momentum. At just six tracks, The Church on the Island wastes no time, delivering a focused and highly effective statement of occult black metal that feels equally indebted to early black metal classics and the shadowy traditions of the underground scene.
