Under Blackened Mountains is a short, vicious blast of Sydney hardcore that sounds like it crawled straight out of a swamp and onto a beer-soaked venue floor. Released in 2022 by Demolition, the five-track cassette delivers fast, ugly and unapologetically Australian hardcore punk packed with grime, attitude and a sense of humour as warped as its promotional mythology. Songs like “Dirty Places,” “Nikeshox Terror,” “Timeless Cretin,” “Welcome Back” and “Glitter” hit hard and disappear quickly, leaving behind the feeling of having survived a particularly chaotic set in a room that probably should have been condemned years ago.
The anonymous lineup of No Face, No Case, No Name and No Shame embraces a stripped-back approach that prioritises energy over polish. The riffs are sharp, the rhythm section pounds relentlessly and the vocals sound like they're being shouted from the bottom of a flooded excavation site. Drawing from hardcore, punk and metal influences, Under Blackened Mountains captures the rough, physical spirit of Sydney's underground scene, delivering a raw and memorable debut that feels equally suited to stage dives, chair fights and general public disorder.
