East Side A Skatemovie by Kuang Lee: A Skateboard Journey To Asia & Beyond

Set in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, East Side explores skateboarding and its powerful influence on youth culture in Asia.

The World of the Asian underground is one that’s typically hidden from the eyes of the West, but through this 16-Millimeter film, we are allowed an unprecedented sneak peek by following the lives and travels of three professional Skateboarders on a tour there: old school legend Kien Lieu, Satva Leung, and Canadian Todd Tessier.

Just as East Side’s storyline mixes Western and Eastern elements, the aesthetic of the film is hybridized as well. Each of the pros makes a journey from the West to the East, and each of their lives are changed forever. The film combines the charecter development of classic sports documetaries with the extreme sport action of underground skate-videos. These two styles create a pioneering film that offers us both compelling storytelling as well as killer skate action.
