"The Old Flame" refers to Buddy's ex-girlfriend Valerie, who is back from France. The story illustrates how a relationship, even a thoroughly dysfunctional one like Buddy and Valerie had, changes with time. Buddy is especially turned off by Valerie's pretentious new friends.
