What gives it its pull is the structure. Time jumps forward, characters come and go, and the focus shifts from individuals to ideas, power, religion, trade, manipulation. Each section feels like watching a different piece of a massive machine click into place. There’s a cool, almost clinical intelligence behind it all, but beneath that is a quiet tension, the sense that even the best-laid predictions might not account for everything, and that history, no matter how calculated, still has a way of surprising you.
