Juxtapoz issue 34 is a loud, grease-stained collision of lowbrow art, hot rod culture, graffiti, prison art and underground illustration, orbiting heavily around the legacy of legendary custom car king Ed Roth. With its special two-cover collector’s edition dedicated to “Big Daddy” Roth, the issue feels like a shrine built from pinstripe paint, exhaust smoke and outsider creativity. “Remembering Roth” gathers stories from fans, artists and fellow weirdos who helped turn Rat Fink culture into a permanent piece of American underground mythology, while the “Rat Fink: The Unofficial History” feature digs deeper into the grotesque cartoon icon that escaped hot rod culture and infected generations of artists, skaters and punks.

Elsewhere, the magazine stretches into darker and stranger territory with Michael Hussar’s haunting paintings, Jon Swihart’s surreal “Subliminal Messages,” and “Shots Fired,” a raw feature exploring prison art and survival through creativity. Fred Tauber’s “A Brush with Death,” anti-war perspectives, graffiti culture and gallery coverage all fold together into that classic Juxtapoz atmosphere where fine art collides headfirst with tattoo flash, monster art and back-alley aesthetics. Issue 34 captures a moment when underground art still felt dangerous, handmade and proudly disconnected from the polished white walls of mainstream culture.
