Chewsday - Dan Greenburg

Originally published in 1970, Chewsday is a satirical erotic comedy by American humorist Dan Greenburg that pokes fun at the sexual revolution and the suburban middle-class search for fulfilment. The novel follows two married couples who rent a summer cottage together and begin to flirt with the fashionable idea of wife-swapping, only to discover that fantasy and reality rarely unfold in the same way.

Rather than treating its provocative premise as pure titillation, Greenburg uses sharp dialogue and absurd situations to lampoon changing social values, sexual experimentation and the self-conscious seriousness that often surrounded the era's liberation movements. Blending farce with social commentary, Chewsday became one of the better-known comic sex novels of the early 1970s, offering a witty time capsule of an age when conventional relationships, personal freedom and modern morality were all being enthusiastically re-examined.
