MASH / IRAQ (2007) is a photo book by Thomas Dworzak, a German photographer best known for his war and conflict photography.
In this work, Dworzak takes a striking, ironic approach: he juxtaposes the fictional world of the U.S. Army doctors from the TV show MAS*H (set during the Korean War but clearly reflecting Vietnam-era critiques) with his own photographs of the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq.
The book blends stills from MASH* with real-life images from the war zone—soldiers, civilians, destruction, absurd moments of military life—creating a layered commentary. By echoing the satirical tone of the TV series, Dworzak highlights the surreal, tragicomic aspects of modern warfare: how history repeats, how entertainment shapes perceptions of war, and how the line between fiction and reality can blur when conflict becomes part of the cultural imagination.
It’s less a straightforward war documentary and more a visual essay, full of irony, dark humor, and criticism, asking readers to question how wars are portrayed versus how they are lived.
