The Embodied Mind: Cognitive Science and Human Experience - Francisco J. Varela, Evan Thompson & Eleanor Rosch

A landmark work in cognitive science that challenges the idea that the mind can be understood simply as a computer processing information. Varela, Thompson and Rosch argue that cognition emerges through the ongoing relationship between the body, the environment and lived experience. Bringing cognitive science into conversation with Buddhist meditative psychology, phenomenology and psychoanalysis, the authors explore how perception, awareness and our sense of self develop through embodied experience. First published in 1991, this influential interdisciplinary study offers a fresh perspective on consciousness and the nature of the mind.
