A Little Book on the Human Shadow - Robert Bly

Poet and essayist Robert Bly explores the idea of the Shadow, the hidden, unwanted and repressed parts of our personalities. Bly suggests that, as children, we begin with a full range of feelings and impulses, but gradually learn to suppress those that parents, teachers and society discourage. Using the metaphor of a bag into which we pack these rejected parts of ourselves, he outlines a five-stage process for recovering and integrating them. A concise introduction to self-examination, emotional repression and the work of bringing neglected parts of ourselves back into view.
