Tits & Clits #7, published in 1987 by Last Gasp, is the final issue of one of the most groundbreaking feminist underground comix series of the 20th century. Originally launched in 1972 by Joyce Farmer and Lyn Chevli, Tits & Clits was created in direct response to the male-dominated, often misogynistic underground comix scene. It boldly explored women's sexuality, reproductive rights, and personal experiences through graphic storytelling and explicit content, always from a female point of view.
By the time issue #7 came out, the comic had matured both visually and thematically. This anthology-style installment features contributions from a range of women artists—likely including Joyce Farmer, Mary Fleener, Lee Marrs, and others—offering a mix of short stories and visual rants that address themes like menstruation, masturbation, abortion, menopause, and the complexities of sexual identity. The tone is raw, unapologetic, sometimes humorous, and always deeply personal.
Unlike male-driven sex comix, Tits & Clits wasn’t created to titillate; it was about reclaiming sexual agency and giving voice to taboo female experiences. Earlier issues were seized by U.S. Customs, a testament to how controversial it was at the time, but also how necessary. Issue #7, while less rebellious in tone, still carries the sharp edge of feminist critique.
Today, Tits & Clits is considered a landmark in feminist publishing and underground comix history. Issue #7, though rarer than earlier ones, remains sought after by collectors and scholars alike. The series’ legacy was reaffirmed in 2022 when Fantagraphics released a collected edition, ensuring its place in the canon of radical, women-driven art.
