Vampire Cities by d’ettut is a strange Australian sci-fi novel that mixes conspiracy, gothic imagery, global travel and social commentary. The protagonist, Anderson, experiences increasingly bizarre visitations throughout his life before receiving a mysterious and powerful artefact. Pursued by the secretive Vampire Club, he travels from Las Vegas through London, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur before arriving in Sydney, where the 2000 Olympics become the setting for the book’s climactic events.
Originally published in 2000 by the small Australian publisher Abbott Bentley, the novel uses its supernatural and science-fiction elements to explore unfettered capitalism, big business, alien intelligence and the idea of a mysterious “City of Light.” Despite the title, this isn't a conventional vampire novel. It is a decidedly oddball piece of Australian speculative fiction, with a distinctly turn-of-the-millennium Sydney backdrop.
