Villa of the Mysteries #1, published by Fantagraphics in January 1996, is the debut issue of Mack White's surreal and satirical comic series. This 32-page black-and-white comic delves into themes of pagan rituals, secret societies, and esoteric spirituality, blending elements of humor and fantasy. The issue includes stories such as "This Is MK-Ultra, Baby," featuring a rock star named Dion Nysos who returns to his hometown, and "The Temptation of St. Epiphanius," among others. White's clean, distinct line work evokes a clear sense of surrealism, offering a unique take on the struggle between Christianity and paganism. The series only lasted three issues, reflecting the shifting tastes in the alternative comics scene of the late 1990s.
Shows some wear to the top right corner.
